How We Teach

We make sure our 11+ course is tailored to the specific exams set by schools in your area, so it’s always relevant to what your child will face. If you need advice based on your local school’s exam, just get in touch—we’re happy to help!

English and Maths
Right now, our focus is on English and Maths since those are the main subjects for most entrance exams. However, if your child needs extra support with verbal or non-verbal reasoning exams, we’re happy to offer that for free as part of the course.
Mathematics

Mathematics
Many primary schools don’t cover the level of maths needed for the 11+ exam. Kids often face questions using techniques or topics they haven’t learned yet. To make sure our students are fully prepared, we spend the first half of the course on topic-based lessons, covering key areas like probability, fractions, and more. This helps them get to grips with tricky concepts they might not have come across in school.
In the second half of the course, we focus on how to tackle word problems. While primary school maths is usually all about simple equations, the 11+ exam often includes real-life worded problems that require multiple steps to solve. For many kids, this format can be confusing, so we teach them how to break down the questions into simple arithmetic, revealing the basic equations hiding behind the words.

English
Our English lessons are designed to cover the three main formats your child will encounter in the 11+ exam: multiple-choice, written comprehension, and essay writing.
Each week, we help your child improve their reading and comprehension skills through a range of questions that mirror those found in the exam. Alongside this, we focus on key exam techniques, grammar, literary techniques, and logical analysis, all structured in a comprehensive syllabus.
We know that writing long, structured essays or stories can be tricky for children who haven’t had much practice. That’s why we set regular writing assignments as homework and in mock exams. These are marked and annotated using our specialised assessment system, which helps us pinpoint exactly where your child can improve.

Highly Qualified, Specialist Teachers
At our academy, we believe that exceptional teaching goes beyond just a strong CV. That’s why we carefully select only the best educators, ensuring that they’re not only highly qualified but also dedicated to making a real impact on your learning.

Our teachers are fully qualified secondary school specialists, with expert knowledge in their subject areas. Unlike primary school teachers who often cover multiple subjects, our Maths and English educators are specialists—ensuring you get the best, most focused instruction.

Personalised Support in Small Classes
At our academy, we believe in the power of small class sizes to provide more individual attention. Each class is led by experienced teachers, who personally guide your child’s learning journey. To further support them, we have outstanding university students as teaching assistants, who work alongside the teacher to ensure that every child gets the help they need. If your child struggles with a particular topic, they can always turn to the assistants for extra clarification. And, whether before or after class, the teaching assistants are always available to chat about any questions or concerns.
Role Models Who Inspire
Good role models can make all the difference—they’re the ones who motivate you to push yourself and show you what’s achievable. We foster an environment where excellence is the norm, helping students aim higher and align their goals with those around them.
Our teaching assistants are high-achieving university students from top institutions. But it’s not just their grades that matter to us—we look for those who are inspiring, genuine, and able to make learning fun and engaging. We care just as much about their ability to connect with students and explain things clearly as we do about their academic achievements.

How We Test

We believe in keeping the lines of communication open, so you’re always in the loop about how your child is progressing. Our teaching team is here to chat anytime about your child’s performance and how we can help them improve.
Monthly Mock Tests

Our monthly mock tests are a key part of the process. These tests give you and our team a clear picture of where your child is excelling and where they need more practice. Every month, your child takes two tests—one for Maths and one for English—under strict exam conditions. The results are then recorded, so you can see how your child compares to others in the cohort.

We mark the tests either by hand or using scanning software similar to what’s used in real 11+ exams. Once marked, we return the tests with answer sheets so you can see exactly where your child went wrong and how they can improve.
Detailed Performance Analysis

Once the tests are marked, we give you a detailed breakdown of your child’s performance. You’ll receive two printed A3 charts each month—one for Maths and one for English. The charts also separate boys' and girls' data, as many grammar schools admit only one gender in Year 7. This helps you compare your child’s performance against the right group, ensuring the data is as accurate as possible.
Compare Your Child’s Progress Anonymously

In the reports, each child has an ID number, and the higher the score, the higher the number appears. You’ll see your child’s percentage score, along with a breakdown of each answer. Green for correct answers, red for incorrect ones, and yellow for unanswered questions.

Target Areas for Improvement
At the top of the chart, we show what percentage of children answered each question correctly. This helps your child spot which questions they got wrong and why. The easiest ones are usually a good place to start, and we ask students to watch videos on the 10 easiest questions they got wrong each month using our online platform.
Time Management

If your child leaves questions unanswered, they’ll be marked in yellow. If their row ends with yellow, it means they ran out of time and couldn’t finish the test. These monthly tests help your child get used to the time pressure and pace themselves properly. By the end of the year, we aim to eliminate all yellow from the chart.
